7 SIGNS ITS TIME FOR A NEW JOB IN 2017
Are you reading this from the comfort of your couch between overs in the Cricket? Or did you draw the short straw and have you dragged yourself into work today?
This time of year is a great time to reflect on the year that was and decide what changes you are going to make in 2017. One of the focuses of your reflection should be your career. After all you spend a large part of your life in your workplace. You may as well be doing something you enjoy and are passionate about.
Here are the signs that it is time for you to be looking for a new role in 2017
-
Your job is not in line with your values
Do you know what your values are? Do this exercise whilst things are a little quieter. It even includes a handy list of values to choose from. Values can change over time, so don’t assume they are the same as the last time you considered them. Once you have confirmed your values, consider whether your current employer lines up with them. For example, if you have chosen Family friendly, does your employer offer flexible hours? If you have chosen ambition, is your employer offering you plenty of career opportunities?
-
You are bored
It might seem like a good plan to get paid to do very little, or to be in a comfortable role that you can do with your eyes closed. However this approach isn’t very good for your soul. People do best when they are working within their area of expertise and can challenge themselves. Consider whether it is it time for a new challenge.
-
You dislike your immediate Supervisor
Many people cite not getting along with their boss as one of the contributing factors to changing jobs. It might be a personality conflict or it might be that you are more qualified than they are. If the relationship is irretrievable it might be time to move on.
-
You become someone you don’t like when you are there.
Do you feel negative about your role, or your employer? If so, then this will be having an impact on your attitude, your performance and your productivity. This is then likely to impacting your wider team. Spend some considering your attitude to your workplace. Could it be improved? Or is it time to move on?
-
You are very stressed
Being an employee does not mean you have to accept unreasonable levels of stress. High levels of stress are not good for your health and will ultimately lead to burnout. If you are working more hours that is acceptable or have absolutely no work life balance then the time has come to find something new.
-
You are no longer learning
Does your role give you an opportunity to learn new things? If not, how are you developing? How can you improve if you are not learning? Consider whether you have learned all that you can from your current role or employer.
-
You feel undervalued
If you are turning up to your job just for the money, then you are most likely not feeling very motivated. Financial rewards are only part of the picture, and you should be considering intrinsic rewards as well. If you are feeling completely unappreciated and know that you are worth more than you are being rewarded or acknowledged, then it is time to move on.
We suggest using this time between Christmas and New Year to really think about your career for 2017. What is great about it, what could be improved? Did any of the signs above ring warning bells for you?
