Workers Compensation Technical Team Leader | 12-Month
Lead technical WC claims performance, capability and compliance within a complex Victorian self-insurance operation.
- Hands-on technical claims leadership role with genuine influence over claims
- Work within an outsourced claims environment while representing the client
- full-time contract, Melbourne CBD, with office attendance required one day pw
This is not a traditional Team Leader position.
You will work closely within an outsourced claims management operation, providing the technical expertise, leadership and practical claims capability needed to strengthen service delivery.
The role requires someone who understands claims management from the ground up. You will need to be equally comfortable reviewing a complex liability decision, coaching a Case Manager, challenging a claims strategy, managing workflow or working manually around system and process limitations when required.
Your focus will be clear:
help ensure claims are managed effectively, accurately and in accordance with Victorian workers compensation legislation, self-insurance requirements, policy and procedure.
What you will do: Working across both technical claims management and team leadership, you will:
- Lead, coach and support a team of Victorian WorkCover Case Managers
- Provide hands-on technical guidance on complex claims, liability, entitlement and claims strategy
- Review and endorse claims decisions to ensure they are evidence-based, defensible and legislatively compliant
- Manage workflow allocation, operational priorities, productivity and service standards
- Conduct technical file reviews, case conferences and quality assurance activities
- Support escalated claims, complaints and disputes
- Liaise with legal representatives on disputed, pre-litigated and litigated matters
- Assist with pre-conciliation reviews, PIAWE and compensation calculations
- Maintain compliance across priority areas including PIAWE, indexation, superannuation and adverse decisions
- Identify practical workarounds when systems, timecodes or automated processes do not support effective claims management
- Work constructively with claims leadership and senior client stakeholders to identify issues and improve performance
- Provide clear, consultative feedback where claims practices, procedures or outcomes need to improve
- Help strengthen team capability and embed sustainable claims management practices
- Support the transition toward improved and increasingly automated claims processes.
Above all, you must be an experienced claims operator.
You will ideally bring:
- At least 5 years plus senior level Victorian Workers' Compensation claims experience
- Strong experience within an agent, claims management or similar operational claims environment
- Previous experience as a Technical Specialist, Technical Advisor, Senior Case Manager, Team Leader or equivalent
- Strong working knowledge of legislation and claims management practice
- The ability to independently manage and resolve technically complex claims issues
- Confidence working with claims technology, systems and data, without being dependent on technology to do the job
- Strong operational judgement and the ability to work around imperfect processes where necessary
- Leadership, coaching and team development capability
- Experience managing workflow-driven claims environments
- Strong stakeholder management skills, including the confidence to engage constructively with senior management
- The ability to provide practical, commercially aware and evidence-based advice
- Experience within a Victorian self-insurer would be highly regarded.
You will operate at the intersection of a self-insured employer and its outsourced claims management provider.
That requires sound judgement and strong relationships. You will need to work collaboratively with the outsourced team while remaining clear that your responsibility is ultimately to support the self-insurer and protect the integrity and performance of its claims program.
This will suit someone who enjoys being close to the claims, understands what good claims management looks like and is comfortable stepping into an environment where their technical expertise can make an immediate difference.
Contract: 12 months, full-time
Location: Melbourne CBD, with office attendance required one day per week
If you are an experienced Victorian workers' compensation claims professional who can combine strong technical capability with practical leadership, we would welcome your application.
